The walnut growers have urged the government to introduce a similar scheme for them as was implemented recently for apple traders.
According to a report in a national daily, the walnuts this season have been affected by a disease and the yield has not been satisfactory. More worryingly, the growers have not been able to sell the remaining produce due to the present situation.
The hapless growers have thus demanded that the government introduce a scheme of compensation. “They should introduce a similar scheme as was introduced recently for apple growers and buy walnuts from us directly,” they have said.
The government recently introduced a scheme to buy apples directly from the growers for exports in an effort to nullify the role of the middlemen. The scheme was also introduced in the backdrop of fruit growers, especially apple traders finding it difficult to sell their produce in view of the prevailing situation following the abrogation of Article 370.
As business activities have remained affected since August 5, fruit mandis too had remained closed and fruit growers by and large were finding it difficult to sell their produce.
Like apples, the walnut industry of Kashmir too is in distress. Despite huge demand this festive season, the fruit hasn’t reached potential markets.
Kashmir produces 2.66 lakh metric tonnes of walnuts, which is over 90 per cent of the total production of the country. More than 89000 hectares of land is under the walnut cultivation in the valley.
Dry fruits including walnut and almonds have a huge demand on festive season across the country. While time is running out for them, some of them say that they have started shipping walnuts to various markets of country including Jammu, which is the main hub of walnut packaging industry.
This fact was endorsed by some Jammu based traders who said that delay in walnut supplies from the Valley had made them look at imports from elsewhere including Chile.
